Bass Fishing Winter Classic in the Pacific Northwest.

American Bass Association Washington (West), First Tournament of 2024 Scheduled for Jan 21st, 2024

The Washington West club is part of the American Bass Association. The American Bass Club has divided Washington into two leagues: the west and the east. The West will kick off their season fairly early, the first tournament is scheduled for Jan 21st  at Lake Washington, just a couple of weeks from today. The tournament was originally scheduled for Jan 13th, but a winter weather advisory was issued for western Washington pushing the event forward one week. The cold air and frigid water will test the physical and mental strength of the competitors, the bite will be tough.

April is the most common month for tournament season to begin in the Pacific Northwest, with that being said, this will be the second year in a row for Washington West to begin a season in January.

The 2023 season began at Lake Sammamish, just a 30-minute drive from where the 2024 season will begin on Lake Washington. The results from last season’s opening day tourney were impressive despite the cold weather, and the dense fog creating a low visibility hazard throughout the day.

16 teams competed, catching 38 fish, the biggest fish weighing 4.70 lbs., caught by team Ronald Hobbs and Jon Sessler. Ronald and Jon would finish the tournament in 1st place with a total weight of 16.18 lbs. Travis Archer and Eric Urstad came in 2nd place, with 13.49 lbs., and in 3rd place, Chris Hornbrook and Larry Vance finished third with 13.36 lbs., a penalty of .20 lbs. kept them from finishing second overall. Despite the bad weather, the fishing was competitive.

Larry Vance and Chris Hornbrook would go on to win the 2023 Washington West Team Anglers of the Year.
