In Tupper Lake, New York, the Goodman Mountain Trail in the Horseshoe Lake Wild Forest has been closed since June 6, 2025, due to a bull moose whose unusual behavior raised concerns for both its health and public safety. First spotted near the trail’s summit in May, the moose displayed an alarming tolerance for human presence, prompting the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) to temporarily close the trail. Despite attempts to encourage the moose to move, it remained near the summit, leading wildlife experts to suspect an underlying illness.
Throughout the summer, DEC staff and a New York State wildlife veterinarian monitored the moose using trail cameras and in-person visits. By August 6, 2025, the animal’s condition had deteriorated significantly, showing signs of severe emaciation and delayed responses. After careful assessment, DEC made the difficult decision to humanely euthanize the moose to prevent further suffering and mitigate risks to hikers. “This decision helps us learn more about moose health to protect New York’s population,” said Jacqueline Lendrum, DEC Director of Fish and Wildlife.
A necropsy is underway to determine the cause of the moose’s decline, with findings expected to inform ongoing conservation efforts. The Goodman Mountain Trail remains closed as DEC conducts a study of the moose’s foraging behavior and habitat range. Forest Rangers are patrolling the area, and signage directs hikers to alternative Adirondack trails.
The DEC will provide updates when the trail reopens. For more information, contact the DEC Region 6 Office at (315) 785-2263.Idaho’s
