Italian Coast Guard Seizes 700 Illegal Octopus Traps in Monte Argentario to Protect Marine Ecosystem

In a robust crackdown on illegal fishing, the Italian Coast Guard seized approximately 700 PVC traps used to unlawfully capture octopuses in the waters between Porto Santo Stefano and Talamone, along the Monte Argentario coast in Grosseto, Italy. The operation, conducted on May 30, 2025, involved specialized naval vessels and highly trained personnel, highlighting Italy’s commitment to safeguarding its marine biodiversity from overexploitation.

The operation, coordinated by the Fisheries Control Center of the Livorno Maritime Directorate, targeted the illegal placement of traps that lacked proper identification and labeling, making it impossible to trace them to their owners. These traps, deployed in a stretch of sea known for its rich cephalopod populations, were part of an unauthorized effort to harvest large quantities of octopuses, threatening the delicate balance of the local marine ecosystem. A professional fisherman from Porto Santo Stefano was found to have exceeded the legal limit of traps, exacerbating the risk of overfishing this prized species.

The Coast Guard’s efforts culminated in a meticulous reconnaissance of the area, supported by the CP 920 “Bruno Gregoretti,” an offshore vessel specialized in fisheries control and marine environmental protection. Working alongside maritime police patrol boats from the Porto Santo Stefano district, the team recovered the non-compliant traps. All octopuses found inside were promptly released back into the sea, while the PVC traps are slated for confiscation. The responsible parties face fines totaling several thousand euros for the significant harm caused to the marine ecosystem.

This operation underscores the ongoing challenge of illegal fishing along the Argentario coast, where the Coast Guard’s investigative efforts focus on protecting valuable species from unsustainable practices. By enforcing strict regulations, authorities aim to preserve the region’s marine biodiversity for future generations. The public is encouraged to report illegal fishing activities to support these conservation efforts.
